Here's a disposal secret that feels too good to be true but isn't: for most old appliances, you shouldn't pay anything at all. Your dead washer is scrap metal, scrap metal is worth money, and people will come take it for free. Let me walk you through the options in the order that saves you the most.

The Free Route Almost Nobody Uses

Scrap services want your metal appliances. Let them have them.

Washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers, water heaters, microwaves: to you they're dead weight, to a scrapper they're payment in steel. Free scrap-metal pickup services exist because the metal's value covers their trip, and instead of charging you an appliance fee, we make the introduction: tell us what you've got and we'll connect you with a local scrap pickup that takes it off your hands for nothing. You skip the fee, keep the dumpster space, and the metal actually gets recycled, which is more than most "eco-friendly" claims can say. It's the rare deal where every party genuinely wins.

The Fridge Exception, Explained Honestly

Refrigerant recovery is required by law, and it's what you're paying for.

Refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, and window AC units carry refrigerant gases that can't legally be vented, so before any of them gets scrapped, the refrigerant has to be recovered — that's why plenty of haulers and transfer stations charge for fridges. Practical fridge notes: empty it, defrost the freezer a day early, and if it sits out ahead of pickup, take the doors off; an old fridge with working doors is a genuine child hazard, and doorless it's just metal.

The cheat sheet: any dead metal appliance defaults to free scrap pickup. Any appliance being replaced defaults to retailer haul-away at delivery. Any refrigerant unit costs the recovery fee no matter which road it takes, so just pick the convenient road.
