Do I Need a Permit to Rent a Dumpster? (Capital Region, by Town)

Good news first: if the dumpster is going on your own driveway, you don't need a permit. Where it gets fussier is the street, and a couple of towns are stricter than the rest. Here's how it actually breaks down where you live.
The Simple Rule
Private driveway, almost never. Public street, usually yes in a city.
Nearly every rule here comes down to whose land it's on. On your own property, a town has little reason to require a permit, so most don't. The moment the dumpster sits on a public street or right-of-way, you're using town or city land, and that's where permits, insurance, and time limits come in. And "on your driveway" means fully on it — a container hanging out over the sidewalk or into the road is in the public right-of-way, even if most of it is on your property. A couple of places break the pattern, so check your town below before you assume.

What About the Street in the Cities?
Albany, Schenectady, Troy, and Saratoga Springs each have a real permit for it.
If your driveway won't work and the dumpster has to go in the road, the cities regulate that. Albany uses a Sidewalk and Barricade Permit (roughly $75, plus $15 a day per meter if it blocks metered parking). Schenectady's dumpster permit is $25 for up to 10 days, with a certificate of insurance on file first. Troy uses a barricade permit, and an unpermitted dumpster in the right-of-way can draw fines of up to $500. Saratoga Springs requires written permission and insurance. The towns mostly don't have a dedicated street permit, but a dumpster left in the road is still an obstruction, so the honest move is always to call the highway department before you put one in the street.
