The question we get more than any other is "what size do I need?", and it's a good one to ask. Nobody wants to get stuck with a bin that's too small halfway through, or pay for space they never use. So let's figure out the right size for your project together, the same way I would if you called in.

How Dumpster Sizes Actually Work

Sizes are measured in cubic yards, which is the volume the container holds. Volume is only half of it, though. Every size also comes with an included weight allowance, and with heavy debris like concrete, dirt, roofing, or tile, you hit the weight allowance well before you fill the box. So the right size comes down to two things: what you're throwing out, and how heavy it is.

What Size Dumpster Do I Need for a Garage or Basement Cleanout?

It depends on how packed it is, and garages fool people.

A light declutter of a single room or a half-used garage fits a 12-yard, which holds about four pickup-truck loads and tucks into one driveway spot. But a garage or basement that's been collecting stuff for years is a different animal. We've seen one packed garage fill a 20-yard without much trouble. If yours is full floor to ceiling, plan on a 15 or a 20, not a 12. When you're not sure, tell us roughly how full it is and what's in there, and we'll get you the right one.

What Size Dumpster Do I Need for a Home Renovation?

A 15-yard is the right size for most renovations.

A bathroom remodel, a kitchen refresh, or a flooring job throws off a mix of drywall, cabinetry, tile, and packaging. A 15-yard handles all of that without leaving you paying for space you won't use. Go up to a 20-yard for a whole-house remodel, an addition, or anything with a lot of framing lumber.

What Size Dumpster Do I Need for a Roof Tear-Off?

Honestly, all three sizes get used for roofs. It depends on the job.

I know that sounds like a dodge, but it's the truth: we've put out a 12, a 15, and a 20 for different roof jobs. It comes down to what's actually going in. If it's just the heavy stuff, like shingles on their own, a 12-yard is usually more than enough room. Shingles are so heavy you'll hit the weight allowance long before you fill even a small box, so a bigger one wouldn't buy you anything. Where you size up is when the job also includes the old decking, some framing, and the packaging from the new material going back on. That takes real volume, so a 15 or a 20 makes sense. Tell us what's coming off and what your crew is putting back on, and we'll match the size and the weight allowance to the actual job.

What If I Order the Wrong Size?

You're not stuck. That's the advantage of renting from a local outfit.

If you fill it before you're done, just rent another one on the order form and we'll come swap them as soon as possible — we haul the full one and a fresh one takes its place. The more common mistake is going too big and paying for air — we'd rather help you choose the correct size from the start.
