Garage & Whole-House Cleanout Dumpster Guide

Cleanouts are our bread and butter, and they're also where sizing goes wrong most often, in both directions. People order big for a light declutter and pay for air, or order small for a packed garage because "it's just the garage." Here's how to get it right, plus the couple of things about cleanouts that genuinely save you money.

Why Packed Spaces Fool Everybody

A garage isn't a size. It's a density.

Two identical garages can be a 12-yard job and a 20-yard job. The half-used garage with some bikes and boxes is a light 12-yard declutter. The garage that's been absorbing a household's overflow for fifteen years, shelves to the ceiling, narrow walking path down the middle, is a compressed warehouse, and when you pull it all out it expands. We've watched one packed garage fill a 20-yard to the rail. So don't size the room, size the stuff: how deep, how high, how dense.

The Room-Count Method

Count rooms' worth of stuff, then use the ladder.

• 12-yard: about one room's worth. A light garage declutter, one packed bedroom, a basement corner. Roughly four pickup-truck loads.
• 15-yard: about a room and a half. A full basement, a dense garage, two lighter rooms. Roughly six pickup loads.
• 20-yard: about three rooms, or grandpa's garage stuffed full of junk. Whole-house cleanouts start here. Roughly eight pickup loads.

For a whole house, walk it and count honestly: rooms with real accumulation count as one, lightly furnished rooms as a half. Land past three rooms' worth and it's a 20-yard, possibly with a swap to a second container partway through, which is quick to arrange when you need it. More sizing depth in the sizing guide.

The Cleanout Money-Savers

Mattresses free, appliances scrapped free, and only a short fee list.

Cleanouts surface the exact items other companies surcharge, so know your options. Mattresses and box springs are free with us, where most companies charge per piece; stand them on their side against a wall of the container so they don't soak up rain. Appliances skip the dumpster entirely: we connect you with a free local scrap pickup, so they cost nothing and the metal stays in circulation — fridges and dehumidifiers included. The one dumpster fee item that remains: tires at $31 each (no rims, left next to the dumpster's door). Everything else from a normal cleanout just goes in. Working the Rental Window

Sort first, load smart, second pass before pickup.

The rental window matches cleanout rhythm well. Spend the first stretch sorting: keep, donate, scrap pile, dumpster. Load the dumpster the smart way, heavy stuff low, flat sheets never first on the bare floor, furniture broken down, gaps filled (the loading guide is worth two minutes; it's easily a third more capacity). Leave yourself a final walk-through day, because every cleanout has a second wave once the big stuff is gone. You don't need to be home for delivery or pickup, and if the job might run long, tell us early: extra days are $20 when the schedule allows, and early asks are the ones we can usually say yes to.
