Around here, spring cleaning isn't a saying, it's a season with a starting gun. The first warm Saturday after mud season, every garage door in the Capital Region rolls up at once, and by that afternoon our phone sounds like a fire drill. Here's how to run the spring purge right, starting with the part nobody warns you about: the calendar.

The Calendar Is the Whole Game

Everyone's spring hits on the same three weekends. Book ahead of yours.

Winter compresses everyone's projects into the same release valve: the first genuinely nice weekends. That's when the whole region wants a dumpster in the driveway, and days genuinely sell out. The fix costs nothing: pick your purge weekend and book several days ahead, more for the prime ones. Same-day delivery, order by noon, is real the rest of the year and even in spring when the schedule has room, but betting your one free weekend on it in May is how people end up purging in June. What Winter Leaves Behind

The spring load is its own genre: the garage's winter accumulation, the basement stack that grew while it was too cold to deal with, broken shovels and the third-string sled, storm-damaged branches, and the machine graveyard, the mower that didn't survive, the snowblower that quit in February. Yard Waste: It All Goes In

Branches, leaves, and garden cleanup go right in with the household purge — no percentage cap, no separate rules. A normal winter's storm damage rides on top of the junk, and a load that's mostly brush is fine too. The one thing to keep in mind is weight: green waste is heavier than it looks, especially wet, so a serious brush pile or a whole tree is worth a mention at booking so the size and weight allowance match the job.

Spring's Special Hazards

Spring purges surface exactly the stuff New York keeps out of dumpsters: gas cans, half-used paint, propane cylinders from the grill, and machines with fuel still in them. The rules: no liquids, no propane, no chemicals, and anything with an engine goes in only after fuel and oil are drained. Paint cans need to be fully dried out first. And before a dead mower or snowblower goes in the box at all, remember it's scrap metal: the free scrap pickup takes machines at no charge, which beats spending your dumpster space on them.
